Chapter 15

Striker dropped the disk into the DVD player and hit the play button on the remote. “Here we go.”

Lindsey watched as a small room materialized on the screen. It was about fifteen feet square with a concrete floor and some type of industrial fabric wall covering. The camera panned, and she could see that there were no windows, just a scarred wooden door. A single bare bulb dangled from the ceiling and cast harsh light onto an oblong platform about the size of a twin bed. The platform was constructed of plywood and raised about three feet off the floor. Clear polyurethane sheeting had been draped over it and secured with heavy duty staples.

It didn’t seem like the kind of setting for a pornographic movie. The other one had been glamorized with expensive furnishings, an exotic-looking locale, and exquisitely dressed actors. This room was ugly and dreary and looked more like a prison cell in some third world country.

The door swung open and a man wearing black leather pants and an ornate mask entered the room. The sight of the mask shocked Lindsey. Even though it wasn’t the same as the one in her dream, the similarities raised gooseflesh on her arms. The mask was made of black leather with silver accents and cutouts for the eyes, and covered the top of his head to just below his nose.

Lindsey got a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach as she watched the man begin to pace the room. His movements were jerky and agitated. His torso was bare, and she could see his muscles flexing as he moved. Unsure of the meaning of what she was seeing, she glanced at Striker. He stood a few feet away, watching the television intently, his legs wide, his arms folded, his face devoid of emotion.

“What is this?” she asked.

He glanced over at her and shook his head. “I’m not sure. Let’s see what happens.”

The actor paced, an animal that had been locked up in a too-small cage for a very long time. A predator that was restless and hungry and would be dangerous once it was free.

The door opened again. Lindsey jolted when another man in a less ornate mask entered the room with a young woman in tow. A chill passed through Lindsey when she noticed that the woman’s hands were bound behind her back. Snarling something indecipherable, he shoved her hard. The woman stumbled and fell to her knees.

The camera zoomed in on the woman’s face. She couldn’t have been more than twenty-five years old. Tangled brown hair hung limply into a face that would have been pretty had it not been tear-streaked and filled with terror. She was wearing a short black dress with thin, rhine stone straps. Her legs were scratched and bleeding. Her feet were bare. When she raised her head to look at the man who had shoved her inside, Lindsey noticed the gag in her mouth, and a terrible fear began to build in her chest.
